Borge Brende, president of the World Economic Forum, gave a stark outlook for the global economy saying the world faces a decade of low growth if the right economic measures are not applied. "The global growth [estimate] this year is around 3.2 [%]. "Trade will change and global value chains — there will be some more near-shoring and friend-shoring — but we shouldn't lose the baby with the bathwater ... Then we have to address the global debt situation. We haven't seen this kind of debt since the Napoleonic Wars, we are getting close to 100% of the global GDP in debt," he said. He also motioned persistent inflationary pressures and that generative artificial intelligence could be an opportunity for the developing world.

A recurring theme in the testimony of David Pecker, the former publisher of The National Enquirer, has been how people around Donald J. Trump lived in fear of his wrath. Notably, Mr. Pecker kept his eyes locked on exhibits and prosecutors while discussing Mr. Trump’s temper, not once glancing over at the former president in the courtroom. Mr. Trump appeared subdued during Mr. Pecker’s testimony, as he has for most of the trial, but at one point, he motioned to the lawyers next to him and crossed his arms over his chest. Mr. Pecker and Mr. Cohen were in frequent contact during the 2016 presidential campaign, strategizing over how to bury threatening news about Mr. Trump before the November election. In urging Mr. Pecker to kill harmful stories, Mr. Cohen often invoked Mr. Trump’s potential anger as a reason for Mr. Pecker to do what he asked.

On a recent evening in California, a woman named Sandra was at a birthday party with her 15-year-old son when she glanced at the clock. She started to panic: It was after 10 p.m.She had less than an hour to get home in time for an 11 p.m. curfew set by U.S. immigration authorities, part of a nearly year-old tracking system for migrant families who hope to be granted asylum in the United States. She motioned to her son that they had to leave, and hustled him out the door and into the car. They made it home at 10:58 p.m., the bulky GPS monitor on her right ankle pinging out her location to the authorities keeping track. Her heart, which had been slamming in her chest the whole ride home, finally slowed.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — When the Texas Rangers retired Adrián Beltré's No. All those Hall of Fame third basemen told Beltré that night in 2019 they would see him in Cooperstown as soon as he became eligible for election. Beltré was among 12 first-timers and 26 players overall on the ballot for the Class of 2024 that will be revealed Tuesday. “I don’t know how I’m going to feel,” Beltré said when asked about that possibility of being a first-ballot pick. Players who get 75% of the votes submitted by Dec. 31 will make the Hall, and Beltré has consistently been well above that threshold according to Ryan Thibodaux’s Hall of Fame ballot tracker.

Cruise ship companies are failing sexual assault victims, lawsuits seen by Business Insider show. Carnival told the Washington Post last year that the alleged assailant was fired from the cruise line but that he was never charged. "The truth is, cruise companies don't know much about the employees they hire," he told BI. "I don't know how they sleep at night, I really don't"Jamie Barnett, from the organization International Cruise Victims (ICV), told BI that the behavior of cruise companies makes victims feel "lost and very isolated." Cruise companies, she said, "will fight tooth and nail before they would roll over and not do what they needed to do, to keep the public from knowing."

“Breaking 234 years of precedent, the incumbent administration has charged President Trump for acts that lie not just within the ‘outer perimeter,’ but at the heart of his official responsibilities as President,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in the court filing. Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers reportedly motioned to dismiss charges related to hush money payments in a New York case, where they argued that the indictment was intended to interfere with the presidential election. His lawyers also requested this week that his federal trial in Florida relating to the mishandling of classified documents be delayed until after the presidential election. The most memorable and oft-quoted line of her opinion suggested she might take a dim view of Trump’s sweeping immunity claim. The case seems likely to end up before the Supreme Court, which has a mixed track record on the issue.

Kevin McCarthy Ousted as House Speaker

The House narrowly voted to oust Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, dooming the House speaker to a fate that seemed almost guaranteed since he took the gavel in January, with a group of rebels in his conference nipping at his heels. “The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant,” the clerk announced as the vote concluded. A temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – is expected to take over based upon a list of succession that McCarthy submitted in January, according to House rules . But in 2015, McCarthy’s speaker bid abruptly ended amid pushback from right-wing lawmakers who have long seen him as insufficiently conservative. CNN —As Europe’s victory at the Ryder Cup was confirmed, one fan couldn’t help but make a splash – quite literally. Tommy Fleetwood ensured that Europe would triumph against the USA on a tense final day when he took the 16th hole of his singles match against Rickie Fowler. The fan darted across the hole and made a beeline for the water hazard, removing – and then dropping – his cap before taking the plunge. More broadly, it could raise fresh doubts about the capacity of a polarized nation – featuring an ever more extreme and performative Republican Party in ex-President Donald Trump’s image – to govern itself. But the Republican majority is so thin – the speaker can lose only four votes with its current margin – and the party is so bitterly divided, that past experience may be a poor predictor of outcomes. So handing a win to the critical Republicans on whom the GOP majority depends may be a poor strategy. Rep. Donald Trump’s legal team motioned to remove the judge overseeing the election conspiracy case against the former president in Washington on Monday, arguing that she has made statements that “taint” the proceedings and disqualify her from overseeing the case. “Although Judge Chutkan may genuinely intend to give President Trump a fair trial – and may believe that she can do so – her public statements unavoidably taint these proceedings, regardless of outcome,” the lawyers wrote, arguing that the public will question the judge’s impartiality. “Under these circumstances, the law and the overwhelming public interest in the integrity of this historic proceeding require recusal.”In the nine-page filing, Trump’s team cited multiple statements from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama appointee who has sentenced rioters involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol – including one where she said that the people who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 “were there in fealty, in loyalty, to one man – not to the Constitution,” adding that “it’s a blind loyalty to one person who, by the way, remains free to this day.”Trump’s team argued that the meaning of the line is “inescapable,” suggesting that although Trump is free, he “should not be,” calling the statement an “apparent prejudgment of guilt.” In another instance, they claimed that Chutkan agreed with portions of a sentencing memorandum which “placed blame on President Trump and complained that he had not been charged.”Cartoons on Donald Trump's Indictments View All 72 ImagesThe lawyers said the statements undermine public confidence that the court “will administer justice neutrally and dispassionately,” arguing that Chutkan should therefore recuse herself and the case be randomly assigned to another district judge. Chutkan herself will get the final word on whether the statements risk making her appear biased. But Trump’s team argued that, because of the high profile of the case and because of the matter’s “monumental significance,” the public must have the “utmost confidence that the Court will administer justice neutrally and dispassionately.”

Ron DeSantis said “of course” Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, his the most direct comments on the matter in the nearly three years since the former president’s defeat. “Of course he lost,” DeSantis told NBC News in an interview that aired Sunday. They did the CARES Act, which funded mail-in ballots across the country,” DeSantis told NBC. As he often does when faced with questions about the 2020 election, DeSantis in his interview with NBC motioned toward the future and how the 2024 election must be a “referendum on Joe Biden’s policies” and “failures” rather than relitigating the past. We got to start healing divisions in this country,” DeSantis told reporters.

I did the latter and tried hidden city ticketing via Skiplagged. That's when I saw an ad for Skiplagged, which championed its hidden city ticketing hack. In my case, the trip was from Los Angeles to New York City to Buffalo. Neither of those options were how I wanted to spend my first couple of days in New York City. CNN —A US Army sergeant who was convicted of murdering a protester at a Black Lives Matter rally in 2020 was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday morning – even as Texas’ governor pushes to pardon him. In April, a Texas jury convicted Perry of murder but found him not guilty on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The governor can only pardon Perry if the Board of Pardons and Paroles recommends it, according to Texas law. And in a June 1, 2020, social media comment, Perry compared the Black Lives Matter movement to “a zoo full of monkeys that are freaking out flinging their sh*t,” the documents show. CNN reached out to the governor’s office for comment on the social media posts.

Yesterday, a jury found the former president liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of the magazine writer E. Jean Carroll, ordering him to pay her $5 million. The case was a civil trial, which means that Trump is not subject to prison time. But the verdict indicates that jurors believed Carroll’s claim that Trump assaulted her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. She said that she saw him outside the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan nearly three decades ago, and that he had asked her to help find a gift for a female friend. Trump then motioned her into a dressing room, where he threw her against the wall, used his weight to pin her down and raped her, according to Carroll.
CNN —A US Army sergeant convicted of murdering a protester at Black Lives Matter rally is set to be sentenced Tuesday morning – amid moves from Texas’ governor to pardon him. Perry’s legal team argued his actions were justified as self-defense, saying Foster had approached Perry’s car with an assault-style rifle and motioned for Perry to lower his window. The governor can only pardon Perry if the Board of Pardons and Paroles recommends it, according to Texas law. Broden said Foster also made social media posts advocating for violence and supporting riots, most of which can’t be made public due to Texas discovery rules. CNN reached out to the governor’s office for comment on the social media posts.
The Metaverse, the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation.
Ms. Carroll said Mr. Trump asked her to help select a gift for a female friend. Mr. Trump directed her to “go put this on,” she said. Ms. Carroll said Mr. Trump used his weight to pin her and pulled down her tights. Ms. Carroll said she used her knee to push Mr. Trump away and fled. Mr. Tacopina also questioned Ms. Carroll about whether she had screamed for help.
Both Prince Harry and Elton John were in court on Monday as proceedings commenced in an explosive lawsuit brought against Daily Mail publisher, Associated Newspapers. Even the Daily Mail published an article on their arrival in court. A spokesperson for Prince Harry told Reuters that the Duke of Sussex wanted to be present to signal public support for the case. It’s no surprise that Prince Harry would use his celebrity to gin up attention about the lawsuit. But if it does go to trial, it is safe to say that it will be precisely the type of trial that an outlet like the Daily Mail relishes in covering.
